Top 3 Design Tips for Parents

Everything needs a place.

Make toys accessible.

Stick with a color scheme.

1. Everything needs a place.

You can’t expect your kids to clean up their toys if there is no place to put them. If you have too many toys, consider rotating the toys out every few weeks. In a Montessori classroom, teachers rotate the work out after a few weeks and after the kids have mastered it. It keeps the children engaged, cuts back on clutter, and helps to eliminate children becoming overwhelmed with choices. (It also helps with the wallet!)

2. Make toys accessible.

Children crave independence. They don’t want to have to ask an adult every time they want to play with a toy. If you put out safe toys in an easily accessible toy chest or low shelves, they can play independently and you as a parent might be able to finish that email!

3. Keep your kid’s room and all the elements in the same color scheme.

Lots of different, clashing colors may make your child’s room feel chaotic, busy, and unrestful. An organized room, color and clutter – wise, will help them rest during nap time and bed time.

“I have been a designer and decorator in the DC area for the past 3 years. I love to mix old and new design elements to tailor to your needs. I have worked on all budgets and in all types of spaces from home to commercial. I truly enjoy working with families to make their homes functional and beautiful for the whole family. I was named, “Best of Houzz” in 2016.

I started as a theater director and teacher. In this background, I worked on set, lighting, and costume design. In each play or commercial that I directed and designed, I had to familiarize myself with design elements from each and every decade to make the shows look authentic. Being in theater, I had to source from all over the area and always on a budget.

I have also spent the past 10 years teaching Montessori. Two of the key elements of the Montessori program is beautifying the space where kids learn and to make all work accessible to them. Dr. Maria Montessori said, “the child should live in an environment of beauty,” and that, “the things he sees are not just remembered; they form a part of his soul.” I seek to make the home a comfortable and beautiful place for the family.”
